We left Sproat Lake campsite at about 8.50am, and soon reached the actual lake along the road! A sign said 86 km to Ucluelet (Ukee) which is just over 50 miles, we were bowling along nicely and I thought we would easily do it in just over an hour......however I hadn't reckoned with some areas of road and road works!! The road was good for maybe the first half an hour, then it became steeper, both ascent and descent and the road was quite bumpy, there was evidence of subsidence, hence the 12km of road works we encountered! You really feel the lumps and bumps and adverse camber when driving campervan, everything rattles and shakes and bumps, even when you think you are well packed!! This van does not have slots for the crockery etc, so we try to pack it with tea towels.
It took us almost two hours to reach the Pacific Rim Visitor Centre at the T junction for Tofino and Ukee. We had a quick look around and picked up a map and some information, then turned left for Ukee, about 8km along the road. We found a coffee shop, the coffee was good but the Internet was slow and refused to do anything with Facebook, so although I eventually published my blog I could not share it on FB. We had a walk around the village, down to the wharf, and generally explored. I wanted to find a nice spot by the sea to have lunch and I drove up and down looking for somewhere, to no avail, we eventually parked by the small craft harbour.
The shore is difficult to access, trees grow down to the sea level and where there is access much of it is private.
After lunch we walked a circular route out to a lighthouse, this was delightful, sometimes in the trees, but with view points, and sometimes with open views to the sea and islands. It was 2.7 km and took us an hour with stops.
It was then time to get back on the road to find our campsite. We had reserved a site at the Greenpoint Campground in the Pacific Rim National Park which is on the way to Tofino, passed the T junction. This campground is on a forested terrace above Long Beach, and we are in another heavily treed site.. However it is only 10minutes walk to the beach, which is fantastic!
There are huge trees and tree trunks lodged at the back of the beach, washed in over the years.
